Novi occupies a genuinely convenient stretch of Oakland County just northwest of Detroit, a modern suburb whose best-known landmark, one of the largest shopping malls anywhere in metro Detroit, very nearly became a landfill instead, before determined local opposition redirected the site toward a considerably more commercially ambitious future.
A Landfill That Became a Mall
Planning for what would become Twelve Oaks Mall began in 1967, when the J.L. Hudson Corporation purchased land at the intersection of Twelve Mile and Novi Roads, a site that local officials had actually proposed using as a landfill before residents and the then-Village of Novi mounted enough organized opposition to block that plan entirely. That successful opposition redirected the site toward retail development instead, and excavation began in the spring of 1975, with construction following that fall as a joint venture between developer A. Alfred Taubman, Homart Development, and the Dayton-Hudson Corporation.
Twelve Oaks Mall opened on August 2, 1977, anchored initially by Hudson's, with Sears following on October 1, Lord & Taylor on March 6, 1978, and JCPenney completing the anchor lineup on May 3, 1978, a staggered rollout of major department stores that established the mall as a genuine regional shopping destination almost immediately upon opening. The mall has since grown to more than 185 stores across 1.5 million square feet of floor area, cementing Novi's identity as one of metro Detroit's most significant retail destinations.
A Modern Oakland County Suburb
Beyond the mall, Novi has developed into a genuinely modern Oakland County suburb, its convenient position along major regional highway corridors making it an easy stop for both residents and visitors moving between Detroit's western suburbs. The city's growth has tracked closely with the broader development of its namesake retail anchor, a relationship between a single commercial development and an entire suburb's identity that gives Novi a genuinely direct, traceable link between one 1970s real estate decision and the shape of the community that exists today.
